Papers, 1875-1997 1965-1997.

The Jewel Lafontant-MANkarious Papers, 1875-1997, contain biographical material, correspondence, handwritten notes, speeches and addresses, calendars, financial records, news clippings, and photographs and other non-textual material. Although the papers span her life, the collection mainly documents Lafontant-MANkarious' later career, including her legal cases, service as U.S. Ambassador-at-Large and Coordinator of Refugee Affairs, and corporate board memberships. Also documented are her involvement in the Republican Party and club and association memberships, as well as her social and economic status. There is modest material related to her childhood, studies at Oberlin College and the University of Chicago Law School and her legal work as U.S. Assistant District Attorney for the Northern District of Illinois and as Deputy U.S. Solicitor General.
